PERSONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

During the last lesson of our English course our teacher introduced a new topic: Personal Learning Environments (PLE). Unfortunately, I couldn't attend that lesson...I say unfortunately, because it hasn't been easy for me to understand what PLE are. At the beginning I thought a PLE concerned all that contributes to one's learning, but reading more carefully the articles about it I understood PLE are about e-learning.

According to Wikipedia "Personal Learning Environments are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to set their own learning goals, manage their learning, managing both content and process, communicate with others in the process of learning and thereby achieve learning goals.

Important concepts in PLEs include the integration of both formal and informal learning episodes into a single experience, the use of social networks that can cross institutional boundaries, and the use of networking protocols (Peer-to-Peer, web services, syndication) to connect a range of resources and systems within a personally-managed space."

That means, if I have been able to catch the point, that all we learnt thanks to our English course has contributed to constitute our Personal Learning Environment.
What I like most of this way of considering learning is the fact that both formal and informal learning episodes are to be taken into account in the learning process, indeed I think we learn a lot also from informal learning processes. For example, I think we learned a lot from the 'experiments' we made at home trying to understand how technological computer tools work.

Another thing I find very interesting about Personal Learning Environments, is that they imply the use of social software in order to share knowledge and resources beyond institutional boundaries.

I think that if a person is able to organize and manage its own PLE in the right way, s/he can really enrich his/her own knowledge.

Dear Ilaria,
I liked your last reflection in your post: only once become really consciuos of our learning environment, we can improve it and enrich our knowledge...that’s true! Perhaps we (or at leats I) should have thought about it a little bit earlier to exploit each possibility of learning that the university and the world around offer to us...

Hi Ilaria,

I agree with you: "if a person is able to organize and manage its own PLE in the right way, s/he can really enrich his/her own knowledge." As a matter of fact, reflecting on how you learn and what you have learnt so far is a really good way to learn more and also to set your own goals.

Cheers,
tina

Dear Ilaria,

I'm sorry that you were absent when we spoke about PLE. I think it was an interesting lesson which has helped us writing our first drafts.

I like what you wrote about your PLE and the fact that the more precise you are when making your PLE map the more you will increase your knowledge (you can see what your learning process lacks, what you need to improve, etc.)

Love,
Erica

Dear Ilaria,
I really enjoyed reading your post!
I know it wasn't easy to understand what to do and I think this depends on the fact that we are not used to reflect on our abilities, failings.
I like and agree with you when you write we have to consider the "integration of both formal and informal learning episodes into a single experience". I think this course has been the example par excellence!

see u,
Elena

dear ilaria,
don't worry! We all have had some problems in dealing with this e-tivity. You just have to take it as something that helps you to enrich your knowledge- as you said in the post-. The PLE may help you to understand what are the steps you took up to now in your learning process but it may suggest you what you should do in the future to learn more and more.

See you tomorrow!
Alida
